National Honey Bee Day may be one day per year, but the care of the environment to which the bees reside, takes a year long commitment.
The oldest bee fossil ever found is between 25 to 50 million years.
Bee colony (within a year) consumes about 70 kg of honey and 20 – 30 kg of pollen.
Bee queen can in 24 hours lay up to 2,000 eggs, which are heavier than she itself.
A brooding of the eggs lasts just 10 seconds.
Bees live only 40 days (during the year).
The bees have to visit 4 million flowers to for just one kilogram of honey.
Slovenia is set to propose to the United Nations (UN) that May 20 be designated ‘World Bee Day’.
The Slovenian Beekeeper’s Association, together with the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, wants to raise international awareness on the important role that bees play for biodiversity, food security, a healthy ecosystem and nature.
We tend to forget that without bees, there would be no food and no life. Slovenia has since long been on the forefront of bee-protection, banning neonicotinoids already since 2011 and supporting actively their national Beekeeper’s Association with their Honey Breakfast educational initiative.
With the World Bee Day, Slovenia could set a precedent for many other European and international countries in the fight to safeguard bees.
